What makes some parties fantastic, whilst others flop? The basic ingredients are of course, food, people, venue and music or entertainment, but when everything is linked together by a unifying theme…now that’s when the party really gets going!.
A themed party is a fantastic ice-breaker for birthday parties at any age. Whether it’s a dinosaur delight party for a six-year old or a toga party for a sixty year old – a fancy dress themed party is always great fun.
In addition to being a fantastic ice-breaker and talking point, the theme provides the framework for the whole event-Having a party theme acts as the framework around which the whole event can be structured. Having themed parties takes all the guesswork out of planning because it everything can be co-ordinated – from invitations to thank you notes, from the decor to the dress and from the food to the flowers. A theme will also take all the ‘what ifs’ out of the cake decorations as many specialist party supply shops and bakeries can produce cakes plus a host of other sweet treats in a huge variety of shapes, sizes and themes.

1 – 6 year olds
Universally popular party themes include fairies and princesses, tea parties, teddy bears’ picnics, trains, cars and army parties, soldiers and firemen, jungle or farm animals, barbie and Tinkerbell and any of the Disney characters.
Kids aged six and older
Fancy dress parties work well for younger children, but boys will usually grow out of it at an earlier age than girls do. For younger boys, army or action man themes work well whilst for girls, party ideas that involve glitz and glamour always work well, eg Hollywood, the Oscars, celebrity red carpet as do pyjama parties.
Adult themed parties
Even adults love a themed party. Be it a simple colour scheme (such as black and white, black with a dash of colour, all-white, pink etc), a movie theme (eg Great Gatsby) or a vintage theme (eg the Sixties or Seventies), any theme is guaranteed to fire up the festivities . Other fun party ideas include denim and diamonds, back to school, vicars and vixens, police and nurses, shock your granny, Hawaiian, hippies, Arabian nights, togas, hat and shirt and sporting greats.
Another fun party theme is based on a country eg Stars and Stripes (USA), Best of British (UK) or ‘G’day mate (Australia).
